“Claims volgt dan onze visie, omdat we vanuit onze uitleg duidelijk maken waarom we het even anders aanpakken.
Understanding both sides
Annemieke Boon and Kaj van den Bosch on starting early, thinking along, and understanding what a broker needs
“As a broker, you sit between the risk carrier and the client. You’re constantly working to find the best terms for the client. I still bring that mindset to DUPI every day”, says Kaj van den Bosch. His focus isn’t on why something can’t be done, but on what is possible for the client, a mindset that’s part of DUPI’s DNA.
For the Senior Underwriter Marine Cargo & Logistics Liability, that’s no coincidence: he spent years working as a broker before moving into underwriting at DUPI. Together with Lead Underwriter Marine Cargo Annemieke Boon, he explains why that combination of perspectives makes the difference heading into the upcoming renewals.
Shared ground
Solution-focused rather than reactive: that, says Kaj, is exactly where DUPI makes the difference. And he knew that even before he made the switch himself. “When I was still a broker, my experience with DUPI was always that they genuinely thought along to find a solution for the client. That’s what sets us apart from a lot of other parties”, he says. According to Annemieke, that only works so well because the whole team collaborates in the same way. Cases are rarely handled by just one person: new enquiries and ongoing situations are shared daily, and if someone’s busy, a colleague picks it up. That way, more than one person is always keeping an eye on the same broker relationship.
Renewals start with us
At DUPI, the renewal process starts earlier than it does for the broker. Before a policy ever reaches the broker’s desk, the team has already assessed how it’s performing. Kaj knows that process from both sides. “As a broker, I only came into the picture once a policy had already been released. Now that I’m on the insurer’s side, I can see that the process starts well before that: at DUPI, we first assess which policies are performing well and which aren’t. Only after that does the broker get involved”, he says. DUPI announces policies that are being released well in advance, several months ahead of the renewal date, so brokers and their clients are never caught off guard.
Importantly, releasing a policy doesn’t mean DUPI is closing the door. “Cancelling doesn’t mean it’s over for good. It’s a pro-forma release: given the results, we want to sit down with the broker”, explains Annemieke. In other words, it’s a signal to look together at what can be improved, not a final goodbye. That conversation isn’t automatically about premium either. “Sometimes the issue actually lies in the process. If a client keeps having the same type of claim, for example, you can raise the premium, but the claims will keep coming back”, she says. Sometimes the solution is instead an adjustment to how the risk is managed.
Working towards a solution together
What that looks like in practice is illustrated by a case the Cargo team was involved in. A client had a high number of theft claims, partly due to the use of online freight exchanges, and wanted to address this by working more with fixed carriers and tightening up internal procedures. The broker wanted to see that shift reflected in the policy too.
“We could have chosen to look purely at the poor claims record. That would have left no room for adjustments”, says Kaj. Instead, the team thought along with the broker and the client, and together they found a solution that fit. “The broker could go back to the client with good news, the client felt supported in their approach, and we made the risk manageable”, adds Annemieke. “That’s exactly how we want to think along, constructively and commercially.”
Sparring with the claims team
The Cargo team works closely with the claims team. That happens not just in the day-to-day, but also on a structured basis. “We sit down together every quarter to discuss what stands out to them in certain claims”, says Annemieke. Those conversations often lead to new insights. “As an underwriter, you often don’t realise something is vulnerable until a claim comes in. Sometimes you only see it afterwards: this is something we should have approached differently”, she explains.
It works the other way round too. Where the claims team sometimes takes a strict view of the policy wording, the Cargo team occasionally looks beyond the text alone. “Claims will then follow our thinking, because our explanation makes clear why we’re taking a different approach. But it also works the other way: sometimes I see that they’re rightly being strict about something, and I take that into the conversation with the broker”, says Annemieke. Lawyers are sometimes involved in certain claims too, assessing clauses and losses from their own field of expertise. “We don’t look at it that way ourselves. So we genuinely learn new things from each other”, she says.
What that means for the upcoming Renewals
For the Cargo team, this year’s message isn’t a list of changes, but one thing above all: brokers don’t have to wait until renewal to know where they stand. Because the team gets to work on policies early, the conversation is often already under way before a renewal is even formally on the table.
“I’m already finding that brokers know how to find me, including on the logistics side”, says Kaj. That, earlier and more personal contact, is according to Annemieke exactly where the difference lies. “We look at the policy itself and at the results, not at a list of standard adjustments”, she says. No surprises, then, but no waiting until the last moment either.
