Investeren in mensen
Still an MGA in character. Increasingly an insurer in strength.
Peter Kegel and Chris Honig on stability, entrepreneurship, and why you should simply pick up the phone.
What can brokers expect from DUPI this renewal season? For CEO Peter Kegel and Director of Underwriting & Distribution Chris Honig, the answer is clear. As part of SMABTP, a French mutual insurer with an A+ rating and a solvency ratio of 245%, DUPI combines the security of an insurer with the entrepreneurial spirit of an MGA. That means DUPI keeps doing what it’s known for: acting fast, delivering tailored solutions, and finding cover that actually works.
A fresh dynamic
For Chris Honig, DUPI is all about boldness and speed: underwriters who aren’t afraid to make decisions and genuinely move clients forward. “Our underwriters are highly commercially minded, and that’s exactly what makes the difference for clients.” That conviction was his reason for deliberately combining underwriting and commercial/distribution responsibilities into a single role. He has formed DUPI’s leadership team alongside Peter Kegel since the start of this year.
Peter recognises that same picture. “Chris and I think alike and want the same thing for the business: good people with the right knowledge and expertise, who also know how to bring that to brokers and their clients in DUPI’s own distinctive way. That’s where DUPI really sets itself apart.”
Stability as a foundation
The key development of recent years is that DUPI can increasingly draw on the strength of its parent company and risk carrier, SMA, market leader in France for 165 years. For brokers and clients, that brings tangible benefits. Peter highlights the difference with a typical MGA. “We have a stable foundation, which means we can take a long-term approach, just as SMA does itself. If a year turns out a little weaker, we won’t withdraw a product or cut our capacity.” DUPI, in fact, hasn’t had to experience a weaker year yet. “Historically, our figures have held up well, and ever since the acquisition we’ve consistently performed above expectations,” says Peter. That healthy growth in recent years is no accident, he adds, but the result of the quality of DUPI’s people, and the ambitious, driven and entrepreneurial mindset that has always defined the business.
According to Peter, that stability is no coincidence either, but a direct result of how the parent company works with DUPI: on the basis of trust. “They believe in our expertise and give us the time to put it to use.” That freedom means DUPI can make decisions that pay off in the long run. At the same time, the flexibility of an MGA remains intact, for instance when a risk falls just outside the usual appetite.
The strength of two worlds
That kind of tailored approach relies on genuinely understanding what a broker needs. For Chris, that understanding doesn’t come out of nowhere: he understands the broker’s world from the inside. He spent years working as a broker himself, and he brings that experience into everything he does at DUPI. “I know what a broker looks for in an insurance partner, because I’ve sat on that side of the table. That helps me offer solutions that genuinely fit.”
The stability that comes from SMA also translates into growing opportunities for brokers. In the Netherlands, DUPI is already a market leader in CAR and Marine, and in Marine specifically, DUPI is increasingly taking on a leading role within the wider SMA group too. In Property and Casualty, capacity continues to grow this year, including new propositions around cyber and environmental risk. Bernadette Bode and Marloes van der Sman explore this further in the Casualty interview, as does Niek Vonk for CAR/Engineering.
Looking ahead: sustainability and further growth
Chris sees sustainability as one of the major themes for the years ahead, and an area where DUPI wants to play an active role. “There’s plenty of knowledge and expertise, not just within DUPI, but across the wider SMA group in Europe. When it comes to product development, we’d like to be part of that conversation.” He also sees room to grow internationally, building on the strong position DUPI already holds. “I expect us to become even more international in the years ahead. Working with our neighbouring SMA countries, Germany, France, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, will only become more important.”
A sound course, even in a softening market
With a softer market on the horizon, Chris is clear about DUPI’s position: it opts for a sound, sustainable price-risk balance for the long term, rather than following short-lived pricing pressure in the market. For him, that’s exactly where continuity lies: a lasting, sustainable partnership with clients and brokers, built on solid foundations rather than short-term tactics.
Investing in people
The growth of recent years is felt on the work floor too, and not only by existing colleagues. Peter happened to conduct a job interview the day before this conversation and saw exactly what Chris had just described. “That person immediately picked up on the atmosphere here. It feels dynamic, it feels trustworthy. And at the same time, people here simply work hard and deliver results.” For Peter, there’s a clear rationale behind that. “There are two things that matter to us in every decision we make: how do we stay attractive to our people, and how do we stay relevant to brokers and clients?” For him, the two are inseparable, much like hard work and genuinely enjoying the job always go hand in hand at DUPI.
The promise for this renewal season
Being there for brokers is what Chris calls DUPI’s DNA. It’s rooted in DUPI’s entrepreneurial spirit as an MGA, and it’s something the business intends to hold on to, even as the stability of SMA as risk carrier plays an increasingly important role.
So, what do Peter and Chris want brokers to know about DUPI? Peter: “You know us, you know who we are. Look up our number on the website and give us a call, we’re always happy to think along with you.” Chris adds: “Even in our busiest months, we pick up the phone and we’re there for you. That’s at the heart of our entrepreneurial spirit, it always has been, and it always will be.”
